What can PUR be used for?
Polyurethane - better known as PUR
Polyurethane, commonly referred to as PUR, is a thermoset plastic material that is produced by carefully calculated reaction process in which two liquids are mixed and pressed into a mould. The material reacts in the mould and gets the desired shape.
The material properties of PUR are determined by the choice of basic liquid materials and additives. The art consists in knowing all the possibilities of variation and getting the most out of the material concerning the desired properties, including controlling the desired material properties such as the density and cell structure of the polyurethane. A tempered PUR plastic is shock-absorbing, withstands high loads and abrasion. Since PUR is tempered, it cannot be remelted and recycled easily. However, there are different ways to recycle PUR partially and completely depending on the process. You can read about the different methods here.

PUR has many possibilities
Due to the wide variation in density, stiffness and abrasion resistance of the final PUR product, it has many different applications. We supply moulded items in both solid, foamed and flexible PUR.
Solid PUR combines hard material with high impact strength which makes it ideal for products that have a protective purpose. With solid PUR you can realize very sophisticated designs that traditional plastic can rarely match.
Foamed PUR combines a lightweight material with high rigidity. These properties make the material ideal for, for example, insulation products, cabinets for the electronics industry and the health sector as well as products that have low weight requirements.
Flexible PUR combines soft material with high strength properties, including high abrasion and breaking strength. Flexible PUR is especially good to use for those parts that come into physical contact with the user, such as the seat, backrest and handles. Furthermore, it provides a comfortable feeling and is soft to the touch.

Polyurethane – one material, many possibilities
Tinby, one of Northern Europe's leading plastics companies, has been working with polyurethane since 1972.
Polyurethane – commonly known as PUR – is a material suitable for countless products. It is a plastic material that, depending on the chemical process, can vary in density and stiffness. This versatility results in a material with a wide range of applications, either used on its own or in combination with materials such as steel, fiberglass, and other plastics.
It is found, among other things, in the following materials and products:
- Solid thermoset plastic (semi-rigid or flexible polyurethane)
- Cellular plastic (foam plastic)
- Adhesive substance
- Sealants
- Insulation materials
- Cabinets
- Furniture components
At Tinby, we produce moulded polyurethane components within the following product areas:
Flexible polyurethane
Flexible polyurethane combines soft material with high strength properties including high abrasion and breaking strength. These properties make flexible polyurethane ideal for, among other things, furniture, baby equipment, play equipment, disability aids and products for the rehabilitation sector.
Flexible polyurethane is especially a good material to use for the parts that come into physical contact with the user, such as the seat, backrest and handles. This is because the material is extremely pleasant to the touch and provides a high level of comfort. Furthermore, it is easy to clean as flexible polyurethane can withstand temperatures up to 80º C.
Solid PUR
Solid polyurethane combines hard material with high impact strength making it ideal for products that have a protective purpose. It can be used for, among other things, cabinets for electronics, medical equipment, car parts and complicated items from 200 g to 25 kg.
With solid polyurethane, you can realize very sophisticated designs that traditional plastics can rarely match. Let your imagination fly with a material that can be designed so only design, function and aesthetics determine the end-result.
Design in solid PUR
Solid PUR: Freedom of design and high finish guaranteed
By means of solid PUR you can realize even very advanced designs. In that way, you get free rein in terms of shape and design with a material that can be shaped in ways that both function, aesthetics and design determine the result.
Curved surfaces, lacquering or moulded details can very precisely be made in a simple process. It is difficult for traditional plastic to match these possibilities.
At Tinby we mould complex components in solid PUR from 200 gram to 50 kg. Components can be moulded with ribs, recesses, snap functions and numerous additional moulded details. We are also able to provide the component with a conductive paint in order to protect the electronics from unwanted radiation.
It is possible to mould in parts such as bushes, reinforcement and electronic parts in one sequence of operations, making subsequent mounting jobs unnecessary.
Large items can be moulded at competitive prices in small batch sizes.
Frequent changes in models or designs are also economically possible. Tinby is able to produce any component in solid PUR.
Your imagination is the only limit.
Areas of application of solid PUR include, among others:
- Cabinets for electronic and mechanical devices
- Instrument boards and auto parts
- Complicated parts from 200 g to 25 kg
Foamed polyurethane
Hard polyurethane foam combines a lightweight material with high rigidity. These properties make the material ideal for, among other things, insulation products, cabinets for the electronics industry and the health sector, as well as products that require low weight requirements.
Polyurethane foam gives you free rein in terms of shape and design. At Tinby, it is also possible to make complicated details such as cross-sectional changes. In addition, bushings, reinforcements, handles and much more can be cast, which makes later assembly work redundant.
Design in foamed PUR
Foamed PUR - freedom of design and high finish guarantee
With foamed PUR you have freedom in both finish and design. Tinby can not only mould curved surfaces and recesses in polyurethane foam. We can also make more complicated details such as cross-sectional changes or reinforcements for reinforcements.
In addition, bushings, reinforcements, handles, electronic parts and much more can be embedded in the same workflow, which makes later assembly work superfluous.
Items in foamed PUR can be shaped with a greatly varying thickness of the same item. In addition, the volume weight can be adjusted to the requirements of the workpiece. Workpieces can be cast from 100 g to 50 kg. Products made of polyurethane foam can also be painted in any colour shade you want.
Application of foamed PUR
Polyurethane foam can be used in many areas due to the versatility of the material, for example:
- Enclosures for, for example, the electronics industry and the healthcare sector
- Tubs and covers for machines
- Furniture
- Spring elements and shock absorbers for production and transport equipment
- Roof priming
Through collaboration with other companies, we have developed, for example, The Chairik Conference Chair for Engelbrechts and the Boxter bike box for Triobike, both in polyurethane foam.
Foamed polyurethane has many advantages
Foamed polyurethane combines a lightweight material with high rigidity. These properties make the material ideal for, for example, insulation products, cabinets for the electronics industry and the health sector, as well as products that require low weight requirements. Insulation products in highly insulating polyurethane
Tinby produces insulating materials in highly insulating polyurethane, including insulation caps for virtually all types of valves and fittings - just like we develop and supply customized polyurethane insulation solutions.
PUR for insulation
PUR insulation is one of our core competencies
Polyurethaneoften abbreviated PUR, is a type of plastic that has very good properties concerning insulation. PUR insulation is therefore used in many types of products, for example in the construction industry.
Casting high-insulating items in PUR is one of Tinby A/S' core competencies, and since project management and development of customized customer solutions are also one of our strengths, many insulation products in PUR start in collaboration between Tinby's and the customer's development departments.
Insulation Caps
Tinby's valves and fittings are made of polyurethane with a lambda value of less than 0.027 W / mK. Therefore, there is a great deal of energy savings to be gained by insulating valves and luminaires with insulation caps from Tinby.
CE is, as you may know, an abbreviation for ‘Conformité Européenne’, a certification scheme that helps ensure a product can be sold across countries within the EU. The marking indicates, among other things, that all safety directives have been met in the production process and that the product complies with a range of European standards.

Polyurethanes for the window industry
PUR for Window Profiles
Polyurethanes are often used due to its convenient low lambda values and good thermal insulation properties.
Polyurethanes may be processed like wood and is very useful in window profiles.
Lambda value approx. 25 mW/m·K
Insulating Foam 50 g/l
Super lightweight and insulating PUR is used where high demands are made on insulation properties and mechanical requirements are minimal.
Lambda value approx. 30 mW/m·K
Sandwich Constructions 150 g/l
Combines the advantages of lightweight, super insulation with that of a hard, strong surface to achieve a resistant profile.
Lambda value approx. 65 mW/m·K
Construction Foam 450 g/l
A density of approx. 450 g/l results in an extraction and impact similar to wood, but still with half the lambda value. Unlike wood, PUR does not split or crack when screwed into or machined with cutting tools.
Advantages when using PUR in Window profiles
- Insulating
- Good properties for machining and painting
- PUR is temperature resistant -40°C > +90°C
- Possibility of embedding materials
- PUR allows but a minimum of water absorption
PUR - and the wind energy market
Focus on climate: strong collaboration with the wind turbine industry
Polyurethane contains many development opportunities for material in the cleantech industry, not least turbine components for wind turbines.
In relation to the wind turbine industry, the development opportunities lie first and foremost in the fact that PUR is a light material that has very high strength and very good machining possibilities. Features that are particularly interesting for wind turbine manufacturers.
At Tinby A/S, we enter into close relationships with our partners to develop and implement projects aimed at bringing production of PUR solutions into the world. We thus cooperate with, among other things, wind turbine manufacturers and product developers.

Pultrusion
Composite profiles for the transportation, car, robot, wind, construction, sanitation and navy industries as well as e.g. environmental applications
What is pultrusion?
Pultrusion is a process whereby thick fibres are pulled continuously through a tool, which ensures that the threads generate the geometric cross-section desired for that particular profile. The fibres are impregnated with a resin, which then undergoes a thermosetting process, creating a solid, shaped profile, which can subsequently be sawn off into the desired lengths. The profile can be shaped and optimized during several stages in the process, e.g. according to the attributes of the material, which are primarily regulated through the type and number of fibre threads used. To put it simple pultrusion can be described as woven and reinforced fibre threads that are shaped into the geometry and strengths, which you need. The production method ensures consistent quality, which can be reproduced.
NB! Combining different types of resin treated fibres allows us to design the finished profile in the exact strengths and stiffness you desire, regardless of whether these items are to be used within the transportation, car, wind, construction, sanitation or navy industries; or it could be used for something completely different.
Elastomers - optimal freedom of design
Tinby offers a wide range of elastomer solutions - designed to meet the client's specific requirements.
Elastomers, one of the main groups of plastics, are characterized by their extreme durability and elasticity when used at normal temperatures, and their ability to rapidly regain their original size and shape after they have been exposed to loads. Elastomers can be used for a multitude of products in many, different industries, as well as in everyday items.
