Insulating PIR and PUR

Have you seen the movie The Best Man? Then insulating PUR and PIR in facade elements might not have been the first thing that came to mind. But it can still be relevant.

The movie Den bedste mand tells the story of boxer Jørgen "Gamle" Hansen. In the film, the more than 50-year-old Holstebro-based company Holm Huse, known for its highly insulating low-energy houses, has chosen to repeat a nearly 40-year-old support for boxing when British actor Arnold Oceng appears on screen in his sweaty training shirt as Kalule – with the Holm Huse logo on his chest.

"I met him a few times – he was an absolutely fantastic boxer," says Svend Holm about Ayub Kalule, who won the World Championship in 1979 and later had a title fight against boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard.

Hvorfor lige PIR?

In Holm Huse, the patented ISO-KON+ element system incorporates high-insulation core materials made of PIR foam, supplied by Tinby Skumplast A/S.

The system is known as an extremely flexible, innovative, and solid façade system. The PIR foam panels used in the ISO-KON+ façade elements for Holm Huse are prefabricated at Tinby Skumplast's factory in Esbjerg and delivered in custom dimensions tailored to the specific construction project.

The PIR foam is produced using a special formulation that includes fire-retardant and self-extinguishing materials. PIR foam is a cellular plastic that traps an insulating gas, making the finished façade elements resistant to airflow, similar to what is seen in mineral wool. The insulating effect remains encapsulated within the cells and lasts throughout the product’s lifespan. The product has a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK and is significantly thinner than comparable materials.

A great message to share

Lars Holm, who – together with his brother Søren – runs Holm Huse after their father, is more interested in building houses than in branding himself. He doesn’t believe he will sell an additional 100 low-energy houses just because he supports the boxing film with his sponsorship. “But it does help create brand recognition,” says Lars Holm, who takes pride in the company’s long tradition. Moreover, he noticed a significant increase in interest in the energy-efficient Holm Huse when they were mentioned in a housing program on TV2.

The interest in energy-efficient building materials has only increased since Ayub Kalule and Jørgen "Gamle" Hansen were at their peak...

Tinby Skumplast's polyurethane foam panels are used for insulation in refrigerated and freezer trucks, containers, and other transportation units due to the material's low weight and high compressive strength. Our goal is to reach potential customers and showcase our capabilities at the exhibition.

PURfection: New Danish-developed technology aims to create a circular solution for a widely used plastic type.

Polyurethane – also known as PUR – is used in everything from refrigerators, shoes, and mattresses to wind turbine blades and cars. This versatile plastic type makes up eight percent of global plastic production but is very difficult to recycle. Now, a number of large companies and knowledge partners are joining forces to make used PUR plastic recyclable, so it can replace fossil-based polyurethane.

Tinby Skumplast A/S and Tinby A/S will merge as of June 21, 2022.

Tinby Skumplast A/S moved from Tjæreborg to Søndersø in early 2021, where Tinby A/S is located. Michael V. Therkelsen, who is the CEO of Tinby A/S, still holds the overall responsibility for the Tinby Group, including the former Tinby Skumplast A/S. Kim Holm Hansen continues to be responsible for the daily operations at Sunekær.
